Subjects include literacy acquisition for students with:
Margaret found that when a complete Year 3 group of children were asked to spell unfamiliar words from the NC and asked to show all their attempts at finding the correct answer, many of them almost hit on the correct solution the first time. As they employed phonic techniques, the result became less like the ‘look’ of the target word. The same cohort was then required to type out the same list of words. All the children performed better and most of the strange phonology disappeared. Margaret decided to empirically test her hypothesis that phonics can be a major deterrent to literacy acquisition for the phonically challenged.
